As of 2025, Emergency Assistance continues to provide urgent, one-time financial support for a short duration—up to 48 days—based on individual needs and circumstances. While the exact amount varies depending on your household size and situation, it typically does not exceed the monthly amounts provided under regular Ontario Works benefits.
For example:
- A single person may receive approximately $733 per month to help cover basic expenses like food and housing.
- If you have children or other dependents, you may be eligible for a higher amount.
- Additional assistance may be available for specific expenses such as transportation, medication, or accommodation if your situation requires it.
Who is Eligible for Emergency Assistance in 2025?
You may qualify for Emergency Assistance if you:
- Live in Ontario (you must be a resident and not a visitor, tourist, or temporary resident on a study or work permit)
- Are in a financial crisis or emergency situation
- Do notcurrently receive financial assistance from Ontario Works (OW) or the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)
- Have limited or no income and assets to meet basic living expenses
Examples of qualifying emergency situations include:
- Being at risk of eviction or currently homeless
- Escaping domestic violence or an abusive relationship
- Experiencing a natural disaster such as fire or flood
- A sudden loss of income due to illness, job loss, or family breakdown

Note: While Emergency Assistance was widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic, it remains available in 2025 for any qualifying emergency or crisis—not limited to public health emergencies.
Who Is Not Eligible?
You are not eligible for Emergency Assistance if:
- You are already receiving financial support from Ontario Works or ODSP
- You have sufficient income, savings, or assets to meet your immediate needs
- You do not reside in Ontario or cannot verify your identity and residency

Step-by-Step Application Process
Step 1: Gather the Required Information
Before you begin, have the following details ready:
- Personal information for yourself and your immediate family (names, dates of birth, identification)

- Your bank account information(for faster direct deposit if approved)
Step 2: Submit Your Application

Step 3: Application Review and Follow-Up
Within four business days, a caseworker from Ontario Works will contact you to:

Step 4: Receive Your Payment
If you are approved:

The amount you receive will be based on your situation, and you can receive assistance for up to 48 days. If your crisis extends beyond that, you may be advised to apply for full Ontario Works support.
